CEO'S MESSAGE

Don’t limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve.

History of Department

In 2006 Dr. Murtaza Najabat Ali while working in UK University developed a low-cost stent and inform President of Pakistan about its significant potential benefits for the deprived segments of the society. In 2007 he joined NESCOM on invitation of Chairman (Dr. Samar Mubarakmand) and established a pilot production plant where the initial R&D was carried out and Bare Metal Stent (stainless steel) was developed in collaboration with AFIC. In 2009 Dr. Murtaza Najabat Ali left for UK because NESCOM did not intend to take the established pilot-scale facility to the next level (i.e., commercial scale production). In 2013 Dr. Murtaza returned from UK & joined NUST to establish Bio medical engineering dept. at SMME where extensive research on medical devices technology was initiated. In 2014 effort was initiated with NESCOM for the transfer of stent production technology  at NUST. In 2015 MoST approved Rs. 33 Million PC-1 for the establishment of facility to manufacture Angioplastry Balloon (PTCA) Catheters at NUST In 2016, the entire stent production technology worth RS. 55 Million located in NESCOM was transferred to NUST through MoST.In 2017, P.M Office and Supreme Court of Pakistan took notice of implanting substandard stents in patients in Punjab and gave Rector NUST and Dr. Murtaza a mandate to submit a new PC-1 related to the development of purpose-built Medical Devices Development Center (MDDC) at NUST.

In 2017,  a PC-1 of worth Rs. 331.12 Million was approved by MoST . In 2017, core production team obtained training from the industrial partner in Germany. In 2017, the entire Production Technology (production and testing machines) were procured from  industrial partners in Germany. In 2019 all the prerequisites pertaining to the international and national certification/lisencing of both production facility and products were successfully completed. In 2020, a state-of-the-art stent manufacturing facility was established and PC-IV against Rs. 331.12M was submitted to MoST.

During the completion of PC-1 related to the establishment of MDDC Project, Federal Government gave the following directives:

  • Take this project to the regular side (i.e. regular Operational Budget should be provided) and a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in the form of Public Sector Company mode should be established for the commercialization of the MDDC Products.

  • Upscaling of production capacity in future with the help of Private Sector Partnership.

  • After the successful completion of PC-1, SPV in the form of Public Sector Company Mode as per the directives of Federal Government (N-ovative Health Technologies- NHT) was incorporated in July 2020 with Security Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP)

On 16th October 2020, Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurated the N-ovative Health Technology Facility at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST).
